Hiraeth – Where the Heart Belongs

Chilapata Forest

Prologue

Amodini looked at Mata. The pachyderm’s fear was palpable in her eyes making them shine with the intensity of two burning pits of fire illuminating the dark jungle surrounding them.

Amu knew she could do it. She had done it before. Moreover, Shrikant’s trust in her abilities strengthened her resolve.

Slowly and gently she placed her hands on Mata’s bristling trunk to calm the pachyderm. All the time her lips were moving silently but rhythmically, singing the loving lullaby that always worked its magic.

Shrikant watched from behind the Sal tree close by as Mata’s huge trunk came down to rest on Amu’s narrow shoulders. The little girl lovingly caressed the trunk humming the Rabha melody. Shrikant had heard it so often that he could almost hum it himself.

As the elephant started retreating with Amu holding on to its trunk, and gradually disappeared into the thickets, Shrikant knew she had done it again.  The villagers raised their hands in jubilation. Every lip spilled words of gratitude and every heart blessed the little girl who had led the elephants out of their fields, saved their crops and gifted them with a new life.

“She is a true Devi, a goddess” cried out Bishnu, the village head.

“Yes. She is our saviour.” shouted another thankful villager.

Shrikant simply smiled at the praises. He knew Amu did it more for the elephants and for herself than for the villagers. While for the elephants of Chilapata, the shamchik[1] was the only one who knew how to string the drumming of their heartbeat into a song for their souls; For Amu, coming to the elephants meant ending her Hiraeth, the longing to return where her heart belonged.

  3. You really make it seem really easy together with your presentation however I find this topic to be actually something that I feel I’d never understand.
It sort of feels too complex and very huge for me. I’m having a look forward for your next put up,
I’ll try to get the dangle of it!

  4. The story transports you to a world where innocence, loyalty and friendship still rule. The narrative flows like the meandering rivers of North Bengal and one can literally sense the elephants majestically moving through the forests of Chilapata.

A must read for all who love nature and wildlife.
